What is the exact meaning of Long Term Investing
What is the exact meaning of Long Term Investing

We get lot of emails asking for clarification about long term investing. What If we hold the mutual funds or stocks for 4 to 5 years ? Isnít that the long term investing?

History has also shown that investment in stocks and mutual funds for long term has provided best returns compared to any other investments. In simple terms long term investment means investing in stocks or mutual funds from 1 year to many number of years but at the same time keep checking its performance and if any stock or mutual fund is not doing well then sell it and reinvest in others. A poorly performing mutual fund or stock would not give you good returns, how much ever long you hold it.

The major mistakes done by most of the investors is they buy some stocks and mutual funds and keep it and not to check it performance and after few years they expect good returns. This way long term investing will not work.

Treat like your business when you want to invest in stocks and mutual funds for long term so that once in 6 months you can review their performance and sell whichever is not performing and reinvest money in other stocks and funds.

Remember below few points if you are looking to invest for long term

1. Before buying any stock or mutual fund check it past performance.

2. Treat your investment as business and monitor your investments frequently, minimum once in 6 months. Every quarter companies announce its quarterly results.

3. Sell out non performing funds and stock and but other stocks.

4. Selling your good performing stocks and funds at right time is also important to get excellent returns so plan your targets of selling. We generally suggest 20 to 30% profit per year. If you are getting this profit anytime then you can sell them and reinvest in other stocks and funds. There is high probability of getting this type of returns in stocks rather then mutual funds.

5. Donít get attached to any individual fund or scheme.
